Presidential Ponderings

"If the task be great or small Do it well or not all." Unknown

In Pierre there was significant debate about who is able to prescribe medicine and who is able to do pre-participation physicals.

Since this is an issue dear to my heart, I took an early morning pleasure drive to Pierre on February 14, when the SB 1099 was to be heard in committee. This bill had already passed the house with flying colors, and this was basically the last chance to kill the bill. Interesting testimony was heard from a few of the 12-15 chiropractors present. Most was anecdotal, relating to how one chiropractor saved a man’s life by recognizing a heart attack. Gee, I do that at least once per week! Little fact was brought forward. Eight doctors were present, 5 of whom testified, presenting the facts that student athletes do not die of orthopedic injuries, but rather cardiovascular events. I still don’t find pulmonology and cardiology on the list of disciplines studied by the chiropractor. Andy they still can’t treat the infectious diseases found while doing the pre-participation physicals. As it ends up, the committee recommended a "Do Pass" with a vote of 4-3.

In speaking with a few of the congressmen during this time, a few important points were brought out. First if you have a strong feeling one way or another on a bill, contact your congressman and talk it over. A statement I was told was, "If we don’t hear from you, we figure its alright and don’t care."

Another issue is showing up at the capitol when the bill is being debated. As one Senator stated, "It’s hard to look you in the eye and vote against you." I realize it is difficult to get away from a practice even for a day, however, if the issue is important to you, your presence and your voice can make a large impact. Even if you are only remotely interested in politics or a bill, I encourage you to be involved. Besides, a day at the capitol is a real eye opener on how state government is run.

So, it appears chiropractors are considered capable of doing pre-participation physicials. Are you able to do a better job?
