 Residents Taken to Court

On February 29th, a Mock Court was held in Judge Peter Lieberman’s chambers. The primary goal of the court was to expose residents to the process of providing medical testimony in the legal environment. Two residents, Dr. Etson Cameron and Dr. Dan Crossley, represented respectively the plaintiff and defense. They based their testimony on actual medical records of a law suit which occurred in South Dakota. Each attorney initially elicited testimony then took off their gloves and went after the witnesses with rigorous cross-examination. Twelve other residents served as jurors and had two minutes at the end of the court proceedings to render a verdict. Preparation of the two residents who had to go through years of medical records and meet with both attorneys preceeding the court testimony was outstanding. Following the court proceedings, Judge Lieberman and the two attorneys gave a critical analysis of the testimony of the plaintiff and the defense witness. Not only did residents attend the Mock Court, but faculty and staff of the SFFPR did as well, and it was an outstanding experience for all involved. Mr. Bruce Ford took the responsibility of arranging for the Mock Court. We all owe him, as well as Mr. Scott Heidepriem, Judge Lieberman and the two residents a great deal of gratitude.
